The short answer
For US federal jobs, the official USAJOBS API is free. For government jobs at every level in the US and Canada in one place, use a jobs API that collects from public sector job sites. The Jobs API reads federal, provincial, state and local government job sites and their hiring systems, and returns each job with its full description and official link. The free trial includes 100,000 jobs for 14 days.
What is a government jobs API?
It is an API that returns public sector job postings: jobs with federal, provincial, state, city and county governments, and often public agencies. Each job comes as data with a title, employer, location, description and the official job link.
Is there a free government jobs API?
Yes, for US federal jobs. The USAJOBS API is the official, free API for jobs with the US federal government. You apply for a free key and send your email in the User-Agent header.
It does not cover state and local governments, or Canada. Many cities, counties and states post on their own sites or on public sector hiring systems such as NEOGOV.
Where do public sector jobs come from?
- Federal job sites, such as USAJOBS in the US and the Government of Canada’s jobs site
- Provincial, territorial and state government career sites
- Public sector hiring systems used by cities, counties, school districts and agencies
- Public employers’ own career pages, such as health authorities and universities
How do I search government jobs with The Jobs API?
- source: limit to one hiring system, for example source=neogov or source=usajobs. /v1/stats lists every system name.
- q or title: search words such as "public works" or analyst
- state (the US, the default), or province with country=CA: one or more region codes
- city: a city with its region, such as Austin, TX
- employment_type, has_salary and window to narrow further

curl "https://api.thejobsapi.com/v1/jobs?country=US&state=CA&source=neogov&description=text&limit=20" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"Public sector jobs often state a pay range. Add has_salary=true to keep only those.
