The short answer
For a stored Canadian or US job board, start with The Jobs API: it combines full descriptions, search and lifecycle interfaces with self-serve plans. Fantastic.jobs is worth evaluating for broader global and enriched data, TheirStack for company intelligence, and LinkUp for historical research. The best choice depends on required employers, data rights, update handling and total usage—not a single headline job count.
How was this shortlist selected?
We selected providers that represent different buying decisions: current job inventory, global enrichment, company intelligence, public search, broad business data, historical research and a direct government source. These products overlap, but they do not solve exactly the same problem. A shortlist becomes useful when it makes those differences explicit.
The Jobs API publishes this guide and is our recommended starting point for Canadian and US job-board builders. This is an editorial comparison based on official documentation checked on October 23, 2026, plus our documented product behavior. We have not run a controlled, simultaneous coverage or latency benchmark across these vendors.
Our order reflects the job-board use case, not a measured universal ranking. Start with the recommendation closest to your workload, then validate a sample of your essential employers. A provider can be excellent overall and still miss the employers your niche needs.
Which jobs API fits each use case?
| Provider | Consider it for | Resolve before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| The Jobs API | Current Canadian and US job products | Your required employer coverage and monthly reads |
| Fantastic.jobs | Global job data and enrichment | Which sources, fields and plan gates you need |
| TheirStack | Hiring signals combined with company intelligence | Job versus company credit consumption |
| Adzuna | Job search and labour-market interfaces | Search snippets versus a fuller data product |
| Coresignal | Jobs alongside company and employee data | Retrieval, search and enrichment credit costs |
| LinkUp | Employer-sourced historical labour-market data | Historical definitions and delivery contract |
| USAJOBS | US federal vacancy search | Federal scope and API access requirements |
A row is a reason to investigate, not a claim that other providers lack the capability. Evaluate the actual endpoint and commercial package available to you. A marketing homepage can describe several products under one brand.
Why start with The Jobs API for a North American board?
The core workflow is straightforward: search relevant postings, render the available full description, link to the original application destination and keep your local catalogue current. The Jobs API provides searchable Canadian and US jobs, text and HTML descriptions, available source fields and documented change interfaces.
Self-serve pricing makes a small evaluation practical. The seven-day trial provides 500 jobs and 50 requests without a card. The entry paid plan is $50 USD per month for 20,000 returned jobs and 10,000 requests. Start with a bounded sample so repeated searches do not consume your evaluation budget before you inspect the results.
A focus on Canada and the US is useful when your product serves those markets. It does not prove complete coverage of every employer or that every optional field is present. Check the employers, regions, languages and occupations that determine your launch quality.
For stored inventory, /v1/changes is available on every plan. The separate expired-ID feed starts at 20,000 jobs and the modified-jobs feed at 50,000. Choose the integration path and estimate its usage before choosing an allowance.
When should another provider join the shortlist?
Fantastic.jobs advertises global career-site and job-board data with enrichment. Include it when global reach or its added fields are central requirements. Compare the actual country and employer sample rather than assuming an international headline number answers a Canadian regional question.
TheirStack describes jobs alongside company and technographic information. Include it when the application is organized around accounts or hiring signals, rather than only around vacancies. Decide which company attributes your workflow actually uses before comparing credits.
Adzuna offers search and labour-market interfaces. Its public search documentation specifies description snippets, while its broader offering describes full details. Test the product you intend to use; do not treat those interfaces as interchangeable.
Coresignal offers jobs with a broader company and employee data portfolio. LinkUp emphasizes employer-sourced data and history. Those are useful directions when business enrichment or historical analysis is more important than launching a focused current job catalogue.
USAJOBS is a direct source to consider for US federal vacancies. Its developer portal documents search and historical announcement interfaces. It is a specialist option, so assess it against a federal hiring requirement rather than expecting general private-sector coverage.
What should disqualify a provider before scoring?
Define a few requirements that cannot be traded away: required countries, essential employers, sufficient descriptions, a viable application destination and terms covering your intended use. Mark unknowns as unknowns until you have evidence. A missing essential employer cannot be averaged away by a polished dashboard.
For each candidate, keep a small evaluation file containing the source requisition, observation time, returned identifier, description completeness and application outcome. Sample large and small employers. Include at least one multi-location posting, one role with missing salary and one posting whose details changed.
A successful response proves access, not coverage. If your reference set contains only the first page of an employer’s vacancies, report a spot check. A defensible coverage percentage requires a complete, independently verified denominator for the same scope and time.
How can you score fit without inventing a ranking?
After the hard requirements pass, score the criteria your team values. For a regional board, an illustrative weighting is required-employer coverage 35%, detail completeness 25%, lifecycle integration 20%, total operating cost 15% and developer experience 5%. These are suggested priorities, not vendor measurements.
Give each criterion an evidence-backed score from zero to five, then multiply the score divided by five by its weight. Keep a separate confidence column. A score based on one successful request should carry less confidence than a repeated, documented sample.
Run a sensitivity check: if a small change in weights changes the winner, the decision is close. Use the next trial session to resolve the uncertain criterion instead of treating a decimal score as scientific proof. Save the completed sheet so future renewals can revisit the same assumptions.
How much usage should a job board budget?
Count initial imports, new jobs, changes, detail requests and recovery reads separately. A local database holding 10,000 jobs does not imply 10,000 monthly billed records. Repeatedly fetching the same posting can consume usage again.
For an illustrative workload, 8,000 initial returned records plus 4,000 new records, 3,000 returned updates and 2,000 detail reads produce 17,000 returned records. That can fit a 20,000-job allowance only if the request total also fits and the assumed update volume is realistic. Our changes endpoint is country-wide, so a narrow board must measure that stream rather than assume it equals only its niche.
Finish with an explicit decision: chosen endpoint, expected monthly usage, unresolved coverage gaps and an owner for lifecycle handling. The best API is the one that supports a useful, maintainable product at a cost you have actually modeled.
Questions people ask
What is the best jobs API for a Canadian job board?
We recommend evaluating The Jobs API first for Canadian job-board inventory, full descriptions and lifecycle handling. Verify the employers, languages and locations your particular audience needs before committing.
Is this a hands-on ranking of all jobs APIs?
No. It is a publisher-disclosed shortlist based on documented product fit. Comparative coverage, latency and reliability have not been benchmarked across all listed providers.
Should I choose the provider with the largest job count?
Not on that basis alone. Counts can describe different countries, time periods, source records or distinct vacancies. Compare a verified sample within the same scope.
Are API requests and returned jobs the same billing unit?
No. A request can return many jobs or none. Model requests, returned records, detail reads and any separate enrichment credits for each provider.
